• Next generation 2013 F80 M3 spotted testing - Triple turbo? V6? 450 horsepower? Already outgunned?

BMW continues to test the 2013 F80 M3 which is no surprise as we should see it next year after all with the F30 3 Series having already made its debut. The real question is about the motor, what will it be? Yes, the V8 will be replaced and the motor will be turbocharged. Will it be a tweaked N55? Or will it be the rumored 3.3 liter tri-turbo V6 with 450 horsepower? No matter what the motor choice we should expect power in the 450 range which unfortunately leaves the M3 outgunned both in displacement, power, and tuning potential versus its rivals namely the C63 AMG the next generation of which should get the 5.5 liter twin turbo M157 V8 from AMG.

The e92 M3 is/was also outgunned by it's rivals. The S65 is awesome but you have to admit the 414hp and 295lb/ft is pretty much weaksauce.

But you are right, it would be nice if they would surprise us and throw a detuned version of the M5 motor....

Looks exactly like an E90 with all the camo. It is a shame they are only aiming at around 450 hp. AMG is doing so much better these days.......

The only rival to outgun the e92 m3 with dct was the p31 c63 that came out later. The m3 dynos just under a c63 but weighs less, not gunned at all. Next gen is shaping up badly.

e92 M3 was outgunned by C63 AMG in horsepower and especially torque. Who cares. Big engine is heavy, requires heavy transmission and M3 outgunned Merc in most of the tracks. Bmw is a lot more agile. The new M5 runs circles around Mercs with more power. The new M3 will do the same for C63 AMG. Bmw is the ultimate driving machine. Merc is power without control in comparison.

all this v6 talk is really, well, aggravating. I wish we had some confirmation that it's anything else. I prefer a 4 cylinder over a v6. but it wont have the 500hp needed to compete with other manufacturers.

car looks good though, it's comforting to know that there'll be a f30 M3 sedan. It's sad that the e90M is dead.

        Wasn't C63 AMG 451 bhp, 444 LB - FT already in 2007? Way more than M3.

If this indeed does come with a V6 I will leave the brand. This would offer nothing over the GTR.

There is a RWD mode on the 2012 model, and you can remove the AWD components to save weight.

That's my point! @Sticky, you are already $#@!ing about the rumored stats but the new M3/M4 will probably be down in HP to the C class AMG the same amount it is now so whats the big deal? We already know the F8x M3 will be lighter than the e9x M3 based on the regular 3 series. Even more so since it will be going from the V8 to the new V6tt. I bet it will be in the 150 to 200lb range.

I do like the looks/shape of this new M3, looks like it has 1M sized fender flares, hopefully they carry it over to the coupe.

It's the 295 ft/lbs across a range of 6,500 revs - this is what makes it quick. Same with an F1 car, torque created through gearing - power created through an insane operating range.

This is a proven formula (no pun intended) - it works man. Click here to enlarge

I'm not putting the car down, I'm saying that the M3 was down in HP/torques compared to the C63 before and will be again. I don't know why everyone is so surprised about that....

It's just that I wish we somehow had a way to measure total are underneath to power curve as opposed to peak power/torque - the average is what makes the car fast or slow. Until that happens, we have to wait for videos/1/4 mile times, word of mouth etc...

I really like the 1M -- there are 2 guys in Chicago that have them - one black one orange, and it's a VERY attractive car (to me - both in sexiness, and performance) - but I really think BMW could have done better... They stuff a turbo to create torque across a small RPM range - and call it a day. What happened to the "real" M series? I would give up almost nothing to get an S65 BLOWN from the factory - making 400 ft-lbs from 1000-8400 RPM - but it won't happen anytime soon... Until it does, I am sticking with "they should stick with NA until they have it 100% figured out".

        Cheers.
