• What if? Next generation 2014+ BMW 860csi rendered

Many BMW enthusiasts look back on the 8 series fondly. The model was the top dog of the BMW lineup. The 850csi in particular was a V12 powered beast sitting atop the 8 series model range. This artist decided to go with 860csi for whatever reason for his rendering. Many people have wondered about a new 8 series and here is one take as to what it could look like. Nothing more than a pipe dream but definitely fun to imagine and think about what a modern 8 series would be like.

Pretty damn sexy, but it would make 6 series pointless in my opinion.

        The 6 series doesn't come with a V12.

Even better. I'd take V12 over V8 TT anyday. It makes 6 series even more pointless.

You wouldn't if you didn't have the money for the price difference. The 850 with a twin turbo V12 would likely be 140k+ at which point the 6 with the twin turbo V8 would be a value.

Too bad the render is out of proportion. And the Mercedes CL and Bentley Mulsanne elements don't work well. The current 6 Series is technically the successor to the E31 8 Series. BMW gets to do all of the things they didn't get to accomplish with the E31 8 Series, such as a carbriolet, carbon fiber, M models, etc.. BMW AG calls the current car a 6 Series as that car, the E24 6 Series had the longest production from 1976-1989. The E31 8 Series had a shorter life and came with a lot of misconceptions and then from a marketing point of view it had "baggage". The E31 was always a GT car and people thought it was supposed to be more a drivers car like the E24 6 not the continent crusher that E31 8 Series was. The 8 is having a renissance now especially the 6-speed manual cars. 850CSi's are still at a premium. The 8 Series suffered from being launched at the beginning of a recession and it's place in the market in 1990. And more importantly, people thought it was a successor to the E24 6 Series which it was never intended to be. BMW AG found that Mercedes was making huge profits from the upper end of it's lineup and BMW wanted to go in on it and there was a huge price imncrease from the E24 6 Series to the E31 8 Series. So they developed a car that had all the technolgy at they had at the time and when it didn't they invented more complex technology to go in it. The E31 8 Series and really the E31 850CSi is my favorite all-time BMW along with the E52 Z8. And BMW has actually tradmarked "660i" which I hope they bring the current F12/F13 6 Series to market with a V-12 and a manual transmission. I could be very wrong but the 8 Series is not coming back. Unless they plan to add an 8 Series and I think a halo car with a Series that could compete with the upper end of the market, and add a 9 Series. We can wish right guys? from f 9999 ))

why do I have a feeling it will come back as the i8? I would really hate to see that happen, but with the way BMW has been heading down the tubes, it could be likely..

Nah, i8 is something completely different.

They trademarked 640i, 650i and 660i about 36 months ago +/-. They could "Unleash" the F12 Cabriolet and F13 Coupe with the N73 twin-turbo V-12 that would compete in the marketplace with CL550 at least in the coupe market. I read it somewhere but it was so long ago I don't recall. I will try and find the source for confirmation.

        It was longer ago than I recalled, it was trademarked in 2004. The 2 Series is noted as 225 & 235 as well as 425, 430 & 435.Link: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...?t-202588.htmlUnder BMW, we see...H7, 225, 230, 425, 430, 435, 650, 660, 125, 130, 560, and 135 (http://www.auto-report.net/index.htm...302.html)Looks like we have a new 3.5L i6 or v8 coming up, (betting i6, doubt they'll put a v8 in a 1 series) Interestingly, we see a 135 but no 235. They also registered a 650... with the V8 being the 645, and the V12 being the 660, looks like there's also a new 5.0L engine... I'm going to guess that they may not make an M6, but instead stick the detuned V10 engine in there and label it 650?

Then does it really have an impact on the current generation? It has been 17 years and it has not been applied even with the relaunch of the 6 series.

Yes and no. They still could bring out a 660i which would really be an updated 8 but not called it. They have 7 year gestation period and the trademarks are applied for during and when chassis testing begins. The 660i may never happen or maybe later down the road. But unfortunatley the 8 Series is not coming back, but a 660i with an 8-speed automatic or better yet a 6-speed manual would make me happy.

BMW may designate the i8 as a spiritual 8 series successor or else why choose the number 8?

Rendering isn't the best work in the world but it gets us thinking and debating about a possible 8 series return.

That is a good question. What if theybring it back in two ways. When they bring out the i8 and then later introduce a gas engined car that is the 8 Series. They could have an 840i with the N55 6, 850i with N63 and then an M8 with a S6344Tu "tweaked to" 650-hp!

the new 8 Series that looks like this which I posted earlier in the year for you!

        Right

But for me... I'm just a bit bothered by all the million different series that are planned.

        I like the classic 3 5 7 X Z.... the 6 wasn't too bad but not my fav...but then they go and make a 1, a X3, X6.... now they want to make a 2? a 4? a Z2? M4?

        They're turning into MBenz...

Looks like it has some jaguar style cues in the side profile and rear IMO, it's not bad
