    • DCT Build Part XII - Build complete, pictures of final assembly, transmission cooler, and Viton seals

Well, this has been a rather lengthy road to completion but the transmission is basically complete. The car was dropped off by SSP last month to Gintani who should have the motor in by the end of this week. The problem is SSP mounted their trans cooler in the location the heat exchanger for the supercharger needs to go so SSP will need to come to Gintani's facility to re-run their lines as the cooler will need to go in a different location. What took so long for this update? Well, we have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for SSP to send us details on the Viton seals that required 3 redesigns but never received the information on why these seals are superior to the stock units.

So, I decided to do my own research and here is what I came up with. These are the stock BMW seals used in the DCT. What is wrong with them exactly? We do not know other than they apparently are not up to the task:

Here are the Viton seals which delayed the project by 3 months. Viton is a synthetic rubber used for seals, O-rings, things of that sort. Viton was likely used as it is less susceptible to decay and already used in BMW applications such as in VANOS. Viton has much higher temperature and chemical resistance characteristics than the stock seals. Here is what they look like:

This is the DCT cooler that was mounted by SSP up front. This needs to be moved somewhere else as the supercharger heat exchanger will need to go there. This means SSP will need to come out and run their lines again checking all their fluids and so forth before tuning can take place:

This is the final assembly. So, the transmission is built but it took about a year longer than estimated. I believe I was as patient as possible and hopefully this will all be wrapped up in December with a built motor, built transmission, a YSI, and a ton of horsepower.

        LOL.

But seriously, he is acting too nice regarding to this problem. This kind of situations never gets solved by phones, just a physical meeting. Physical touches come handy too.

You are correct, and I hope everyone knows I am just busting his chops. I want to see him back out at the track. The first time I ever met Sticky was over 3 years ago at a track event long before this site was even a thought.

You are absolutely correct, he is being too nice and not making enough noise, hopefully my posts will grab somebodys attention and get the point across to someone to speed things up. The fact that he has not been given a completion date is very very scary. If Gintani is so experienced and knowledgable about what they do they should be able to give an ETA at the begining of the project, here we are 2 years into this and it appears that they still have not given a definetive completion date. I would not be OK with that and I would be showing up at the tuners shop once or twice a week to check on progress, at least that way you can see if the car is actually even being touched or if they just have it pushed off into some dark corner of the shop gathering dust. I had to resort to these "check-ups" a year ago when my car was at evosport, keep in mind I live in Chicago and evosport is in Huntington Beach, CA so my check-up visits required a four hour flight and a hotel room yet I still managed to get out there several times, Sticky is just down the road from Gintani therefore he should be up their ass like a suppository.

I really don't see y u keep harping on sticky pushing gintani. The hold up has not been gintani, it was the trans at ssp. The motor is built and has been, but they can't run amd tune a car with no trans. Now its all in one place, then some things need to be moved. That's where it is now. Once rhings r moved, they will continue. To say gintani has held him hostage for 2 yrs is unfair and incorrect.

I don't recall seeing any more than 2 builds coming from weistec, where gintani has been busy building a few stage 3s(and as stated already, stickys has been built and awaiting things from other companies). So maybe they actually do have a backlog of work as opposed to the 2 premier customers with endless funding to put and justify (read Paul walkers car) their project ahead of others...

Well said my friend. Plus showing yourself there make them believe that you care about your car. If you don't show up, they are going to think "He doesn't give a crap about his car, then why we should?".

I'm not saying he should set that place on fire and such, but not being too nice too.

You know, I've dealt in both way. I paid someone to build a house for me. I went checking on the house everyday after the work. Since i was tired, i acted like a jerk and was so harsh with this builder. at the end, he gave a trash looking house. I don't blame him though, i was responsible for this. If i acted nicer, i would get a much better house.

Another story. I bought a Nissan and wanted to make a serious off-roader, so i gave the car to an expert. I acted too nice. What i got at the end? The car i had in my mind? No. A car which look liked it was done by apes. I got freaked by seeing that car and broke some stuff and threatened the guy. two weeks later, the car was done beautifully.

What's my point? You know, Please be quiet, Shout your mouth, and STFU all three mean the very same thing. However, to some you should say STFU to see the results, and to some you should say Please be quiet. It's very important to realize what kind of person you are dealing with and which type of sentence you should choose.

Im going on the assumption that the car made it back into Gintanis hands in early November, I'm pretty sure I read that on multiple threads pertaining to Sticky's car, right? So is 2.5 months not enough time to bolt in a trans and drop in an already built motor???? Stevie $#@!ing Wonder could have bolted in a trans and motor by now so I have a hard time beliveing the motor was already built. Let's use some common sense here people.

All builds/projects should start out with mutual respect and politeness, if things start out on the wrong foot before a single wrench is turned it's only gonna get worse. I don't make it a point of checking up on tuners but at some point when deadline after dealine is missed I have to turn off the nice guy attitude and turn up the heat a little. If that does not grab their attention to let them know I mean business I up the pressure, maybe even resort to an online thread letting people know the honeymoon is over, if that doesnt work the heat gets turned up more, last but not least I threaten legal action, if that does not get their attention you know you are $#@!ed.

so, if something has to be moved, and not everything for the trans issue is not there, they should start-stop-start again? not the way i nor most people would do things..

Step 2) Ask for a $#@!ing tracking number for the shipment so you don't have to wait until the end of the business day Monday to find out that the $#@! really did'nt ship out. (anyone want to take bets on this)

Squeeky wheel my friend, squeeky wheel...You're too passive, you're getting owned by these tuners. Let them know you mean business and they will make $#@! happen, if $#@! doesnt happen smear their $#@!ing names like soft butter on toast.
Tracking number is posted, don't know what you are saying.

Secondly, you're too aggressive in thinking me yelling and screaming is going to get things done faster. I've been speaking with the tuner, I'm comfortable with the timetable and what they are doing. It's being handled, thanks.
