• DCT Build Part XII - Build complete, pictures of final assembly, transmission cooler, and Viton seals

Well, this has been a rather lengthy road to completion but the transmission is basically complete. The car was dropped off by SSP last month to Gintani who should have the motor in by the end of this week. The problem is SSP mounted their trans cooler in the location the heat exchanger for the supercharger needs to go so SSP will need to come to Gintani's facility to re-run their lines as the cooler will need to go in a different location. What took so long for this update? Well, we have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for SSP to send us details on the Viton seals that required 3 redesigns but never received the information on why these seals are superior to the stock units.

So, I decided to do my own research and here is what I came up with. These are the stock BMW seals used in the DCT. What is wrong with them exactly? We do not know other than they apparently are not up to the task:

Here are the Viton seals which delayed the project by 3 months. Viton is a synthetic rubber used for seals, O-rings, things of that sort. Viton was likely used as it is less susceptible to decay and already used in BMW applications such as in VANOS. Viton has much higher temperature and chemical resistance characteristics than the stock seals. Here is what they look like:

This is the DCT cooler that was mounted by SSP up front. This needs to be moved somewhere else as the supercharger heat exchanger will need to go there. This means SSP will need to come out and run their lines again checking all their fluids and so forth before tuning can take place:

This is the final assembly. So, the transmission is built but it took about a year longer than estimated. I believe I was as patient as possible and hopefully this will all be wrapped up in December with a built motor, built transmission, a YSI, and a ton of horsepower.

I am sorry to hear that. I am a fervent 6mt guy but the DCT system fascinates me. I want to see it at full potential.

That said, is SSP coming to the rescue with something re-designed? Or are you getting the "use at your own risk - S.O.L." kind of answers from them?

My guess is you fused something - hopefully clutch packs and not something internal.

Good luck. I want to see this bastard run.

EDIT: + rep for you Joe for giving out some technical updates.

I mean a simple solution is just a stock clutch basket. But I mean what a waste of everyone's time.

Don't know yet Alex says Kris@SSP is not answering his calls. Not a good sign...

No, definitely incorrect guess. The clutches just slip. I mean it's really some kind of mechanical error or hardware that needs to be fixed. It may be an honest mistake. Only way to know is to get in there but I would definitely like SSP to fix this.

I mean if SSP can't or won't then basically stock clutches and I'll need to find someone who actually can do it. I'm not writing SSP off just yet it's up to them right now how they would like to handle this.

Dang. That sucks Sticky. Is this similar to what Drew had with the clutches?

Lets hope SSP steps up with a solution. I'd give them a few days to chew on it before crucifying them.

Sorry to hear this. I know what kind of a hassle this can be. Not with the DCT specifically but with unforeseen issues that just eat up time. I hope this all gets taken care of and it goes smooth for you.

EDIT: went on the SSP site and they list these clutch disks for sale. Have they done this on any cars other than yours @Sticky ?

I don't know I don't talk to him and would not particularly care to.

I don't know what the rush is in all honesty. I want it done right not just sloppy and fast for the sake of the internet.

        Is it that time yet?

Thanks so much Kris@SSP for delaying MY project for over a year and not delivering what was promised after missing your deadline by over a year, class act. Thanks for using me to develop clutches you sell and hanging me out to dry because your "trans build" you spent oh sooooo much time and money on doesn't work. If you actually used that time to do the work you were supposed to maybe it would function correctly?

It's been a continuous flow of setbacks, and this could be a release point for the frustration. Sure I'm not impressed with SSP's response, and I don't know all the details, but I would give yourself some space to figure out what to do next. Publicly shaming a vendor isn't great advertising for a future potential partner...

I was patient, kind, donated my time, and never said a single bad word. I gave SSP every opportunity and everything they needed and wasn't pushy at all like many suggested I should be.

All I want to do is share my experience but of course your perspective is mature as always. I will take some time to think it over.
