    • DCT Build Part XII - Build complete, pictures of final assembly, transmission cooler, and Viton seals

Well, this has been a rather lengthy road to completion but the transmission is basically complete. The car was dropped off by SSP last month to Gintani who should have the motor in by the end of this week. The problem is SSP mounted their trans cooler in the location the heat exchanger for the supercharger needs to go so SSP will need to come to Gintani's facility to re-run their lines as the cooler will need to go in a different location. What took so long for this update? Well, we have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for SSP to send us details on the Viton seals that required 3 redesigns but never received the information on why these seals are superior to the stock units.

So, I decided to do my own research and here is what I came up with. These are the stock BMW seals used in the DCT. What is wrong with them exactly? We do not know other than they apparently are not up to the task:

Here are the Viton seals which delayed the project by 3 months. Viton is a synthetic rubber used for seals, O-rings, things of that sort. Viton was likely used as it is less susceptible to decay and already used in BMW applications such as in VANOS. Viton has much higher temperature and chemical resistance characteristics than the stock seals. Here is what they look like:

This is the DCT cooler that was mounted by SSP up front. This needs to be moved somewhere else as the supercharger heat exchanger will need to go there. This means SSP will need to come out and run their lines again checking all their fluids and so forth before tuning can take place:

This is the final assembly. So, the transmission is built but it took about a year longer than estimated. I believe I was as patient as possible and hopefully this will all be wrapped up in December with a built motor, built transmission, a YSI, and a ton of horsepower.

Trust me, I'll explain everything in due time. Let's just say there's a reason nobody has gone further with the S65.

I don't think it will be ready for the event. It simply is cutting it too close.

It has been like 3 years, you should be banned from here for using the phrase"cutting it too close" in the same breath as anything having to do with your car. The $#@!ing thing better run 8s after the time this has taking.

The only thing you will be cutting close is the likelyhood you you hitting retirement age before your car gets done

my thoughts exactly...I mean...it didnt even take UGR this long to get their first TT gallardo together....or AMS to get into their alpha 10+ cars....i really dont buy that the S65 is really that much more complicated FWIW

In the time Sticky's car has been being built I went from NA to Weistec 2.3L stage 1, then stage 1 plus with heads, then I was the test/development mule for their stage 3 plus forged internals, 3.0L blower and trans upgrade and cooling mods. Ordered another Black Series, AMG built it and shipped it over, I enjoyed it for 4 months and now it too is running a Weistec Stage 3. I am now ordering a SLS BS which at this rate is going will be here and modded before Sticky gets his car gets back.

We were having this very same discussion here a year ago before the Shift Sector event and he was "trying to make that event" as well, he said "it was gonna be close". I am going to go out on a limb and say my SLS BS hits shore before his M3 hits the track.

I was also able to mod my e93, run it, wound up crashing it, sat for a solid year trying to figure out what I was going to get, then decided on the cts-v, bought it, enjoyed it stock for a few months, had it down installed all the stuff with the whipple, had EVERYTHING break on me and not all at once, fixed every issue, had it running and made it to the end of the season, decided to pull the motor, build it, and now the motor is just about done and im also betting my V will be up running and hitting the track before the M3 does as well....

^those last two posts really put this into perspective. I wish Sticky would just be honest with what the hold up is at this point. I honestly would not be surprised if both members' claims are true. According to sticky, it was nearly done but he wanted to add something else right? And now that is what's taking so long?

Honestly, if all you have to say is "OMG so long" go talk somewhere else.

If you want to talk about building a DCT and an S65, do it here.

        You guys have no clue.
