• The all new 2012 F30 3 series revealed, mild update - Pictures and video of 335i, 328i, and the Active Hybrid 3

Well here it is, the new 2012 4 door F30 3 series. Not really all that much different externally with BMW playing it extremely safe. The styling envelope is not being pushed with the 3 taking cues from the F10 5 series for the headlights and the rear taillight design being as benign as possible. The interior is also a very minor update on the E90 with the BMW switchgear and gear lever that we have all grown accustomed to.

The car is larger with 3.7 inches of length added versus the previous model as well as a 2.0 inch longer wheelbase. This allows legroom to increase for the rear seat passengers by almost an inch. BMW claims the increase in size will not add weight with the F30 supposedly weighing 80 pounds less than the E90. That is something we will have to see when the curb weight tests come around for the new car.

The motor will be familiar except for the 328i which gets the new N20 4 cylinder. The 335 has the same N55 single turbo direct injected 6 cylinder. A hybrid model is also available. Overall, BMW played it extremely conservative with the new 3 and the good news is E90's will not look dated. Average people will likely have trouble even noticing the new changes.

Uh... no they haven't. Even their facelift looks better than BMW's entire new generation:

Not at all but remember the E39 generation? BMW was criticized for having to strong of a family resemblance and bland styling. This led to the Bangle era which broke them out of it. Now they are falling into the same pitfalls that were an issue before by playing it too conservative after they already broke the mold. This means a step backward but BMW has never been aggressive with styling traditionally... until Bangle.

Renderings and real life are two different things. Audi's styling is progressing more than BMW's. It's edgier, modern, fresher.

        renderings of Just A3. facelifted A5 looks like A6, A7, A8, A1, Q3.

the design of Audi's is more modern, i admit it. but let's see How these modern designs will look in 4 years. They will look dated, exactly how Bangle cars look now.
The new design route from BMW is like the elegant route of 80's and 90's and it's exactly how a German car should look. it gets old, but much slower than others.

i know i'm not the best visual artist... but i hope they facelift it soon and this change will be implemented in that...

don't know why they would put it in market with the hood like that... i find it... stupid...

that would cost more to build than the actual hood and a nightmare to repair.

What do you mean ?? this is exactly like the hood is on the E60 ??

I think my photoshop illustrates perfectly how good looking the F30 would look with the hood like that...

this hood is different than E60's. it's shaped curvier and if they wanted to make the front end in one piece the build cost more than making 2 piece front end.

Still... my suggestion looks better... IMO F30 is ugly only because of this..

i kinda agree with you. i like my e46 with the kidney grills attached to the hood all in one piece. that line kinda distracts and takes away from the lines of the front

The hood design (which is the same on the F10) is like that because of new crash test requirements in Europe, I don't remember specifically but apparently they had to do it that way...or something.

I hope what I said before wasn't taken out of context, I love Audis (except for the way they drive) I think they look great but I think BMW's styling has evolved more than Audi's over the past few generations. If you disagree, that's fine.

And yes Sticky, I do remember the E39 generation...I know some criticized BMW for the same sausage, different lengths philosophy but care to guess what my favorite BMWs are when it comes to styling? I'll give you a hint: E39 generation. So you can probably see why we disagree on this.

Actually I retract that last part, my absolute favorites are the cars of the E28/E34 5 series generation, E39 is a close second.

The E39 is a classic. But the same old BMW lines won't get it done any longer. Not with Mercedes and Audi pushing the styling envelope. The E39 was nice, but the E60 was necessary. Like it or not, Bangle kicked BMW into the future.
