• Full BMW N20 turbo 4 cylinder technical specifications plus history, overview, and N52 comparison

The document posted below is the full BMW N20 technical training document and it is incredibly in depth. If anyone wanted any and all information on the new N20 direct injected turbo 4 cylinder, here you go. It is a long but interesting read as BMW provides the history as well stating this is the first 4 cylinder sold in the United States since the M44 4 cylinder which was last seen in 1999. Another interesting tidbit is that BMW began producing 4 cylinders in 1927 with the 3/15. Hey, may be useful for trivia one day.

On page 4 there is a very interesting comparison between the N20 and N52 which is the motor being replaced. The N52 is shown putting out more power but the N20 has substantially more power down low. Great to see the two different approaches overlaid on a graph. Page 5 shows why we are seeing the N20 now and all one needs to do is look at the fuel consumption and emissions to understand why.

A great read for BMW geeks and a really well done document on the part of BMW.

Awesome!Does something like this exist for the N54?BMW did a GREAT job at building that tech book. I can actually visualize Valvetronic and how they pass around the oil pressure to drive everything now.

I'm sure something does exist like this for the N54 although likely not to this level.

Gotta love the area under the curve for the N20, sure the N52 makes more peak power but there's no doubt the new engine will be quicker.I used to have an N52 powered 328i and thought it was a great engine, but I'm all for this new powerplant.

Actually, this whole thing has me thinking of doing an N52 vs. N20 article. I need N20 dyno numbers though.

The dynos should start coming out soon, I would imagine. Doesn't the new Z4 have this engine?

Very interesting that this motor uses N55 injectors, and a N63 HPFP. I wonder what the limitations of the fuel system will be.
