• Qualifying report for 2011 European Grand Prix - Vettel Takes Pole for Seventh Time, Rosberg 7th, and Schumacher 8th

Vettel nabs pole again for the seventh time this season, squashing reports that the ban on engine maps would end Red Bulls dominance during qualifying. Vettel claimed the pole position with a time of 1:36.975. Meanwhile Mercedes GP wih fill the fourth row at the start with Rosberg edging Schumacher by 0.009sec for spot 7.

      Rosberg said after qualifying:

Yesterday was very busy with a lot of set-up changes but the team and I did a decent job today to improve the car. It is difficult out on track this weekend and we have to be careful of overheating the rear tyres - that will certainly be something to watch out for tomorrow. I was able to save one set of soft tyres, by running used options in Q2, and this can be important in the race as we aim to score some nice points. I'm looking forward to it.
      Schumacher:

I might have improved by one place but in the penultimate slow corner, I attacked a bit too early, got oversteer and had to lift for a moment which cost me the place to Nico. But all in all, we came in where we had expected to finish. It would be optimistic in my view to expect that we can attack the cars in front of us tomorrow because I think our starting positions realistically reflect where we stand at the moment. So letís see how the race develops and what we can make out of it tomorrow.
      Brawn:

All of the drivers in Q3 managed reasonable laps, so we fell into the natural order, with Nico and Michael in seventh and eighth positions. The team has done a good job all weekend to maintain our position and get everything out of the current package. We are in good shape for the race, particularly Nico with a fresh set of option tyres available, and our high-fuel running has not been too bad. We must be aware of potentially even higher track temperatures tomorrow, but today we achieved the maximum that's possible for us at the moment. However, our plan and ambition remains to move forward out of that position over the next months.
      Norbert Haug:

Both drivers did only one run in Q3 with a new set of options. Nico's and Michael's lap times are split by 0.009 seconds, so a good effort on the limit of the car from both drivers.

Nice job Scourge! Looks like Vettel is just plain fast no matter what engine mapping is used.

is anyone going to watch the race?

        Thanks Sticky.

I'll be watching it Sorena. It will probably be boring, unless Webber does another backflip with his car again, but I don't have anything else to do.

If no one can watching it on TV, I have a couple of links that stream the races. Let me know and I can pm them to you unless it's cool to post them here, then I will.

Vettel was back on form this race, leading from start to finish, ahead of Alonso and Webber. Alonso won his battle against Webber to claim second, but in the end was unable to match Vettel's pace.

Hamilton had a rough afternoon trying to manage his high tyre wear, but was able to hold off Massa in the end for forth place. Button suffering from KERS failure claimed 6th.

Vettel is now 77 points ahead of his competition, Button and Webber, They are tied, but Button is second since he holds a victory this season.

Rosberg managed 7th place claiming that was the best the team could achieve saying this:

I'm happy with my seventh place today as that is the maximum that we could have achieved and we got everything out of the car. It was great to overtake Jenson at the start, and we made the right strategy choice to go for three stops. The introduction of DRS was a positive for the race here in Valencia, and we saw some nice overtaking moves. Now we need to keep pushing for our two home races to close the gap to the fastest teams. I'm sure the whole team will work very hard before Silverstone, and I look forward to racing in front of so many people from the team and their families.
Schumacher on the other hand had an aweful race finishing 17th after his accident with Petrov on lap 15, breaking his front wing and had to pit for repairs.

Schumacher said this after the race:

Not a very satisfying race for me today, The outcome was decided after lap 15 when I slid into Petrov and lost the points I could perhaps have achieved. Our race pace should have allowed me to finish more or less where I started, but that is only speculation after the incident. I saw Petrov quite late, even though I was aware that he was coming, and tried to brake as late as possible and go round the corner with him. But when I wanted to draw back, I locked the front wheel and slipped into him, which was clearly my mistake. From then onwards, the race was done and I just had to drive the car over the finish line. We will now look ahead to Silverstone which is one of our home races.
        Ross Brawn:

We couldnít have realistically expected any more and he scored valuable points. As for Michael, his collision was frustrating because he was running at a very similar level to Nico in the early stages and could also have finished close to him, in the points.
After our concerns earlier in the weekend, the tyres behaved well and we didnít experience any serious degradation problems, which represents a step forward for us compared to previous races. However, we set our targets very much higher than racing for seventh place: our work in the next weeks will focus on improving the carís performance in order to race with the teams ahead of us.
        Norbert Haug:

Our current technical package, which is lacking performance. The team is working very hard to bring the planned updates for our cars in order to close the gap to the current top six runners. Michael had an unfortunate clash early in the race and the additional pit stop this required prevented him from scoring points.

Yeah it is. I actually passed out around lap 40 since there wasn't much going on. i really hope the blown rear diffuser ban makes thing more exciting in Silverstone.

As promised, I'll have a lot of pics and some vids since I'll be at the Silverstone GP in 2 weeks. Don't worry Sticky, I'll take plenty of pictures of the babes there.
