• Audi Motorsport states that Formula 1 is irrelevant and that Le Mans is better for road car development

      Wow, talk about some bold statements. Audi Motorsport boss Wolfgang Ullrich stated the following to CAR magazine, "There’s a very good reason why we are not in F1. There’s no relevance to the road. Audi has always been engaged in motorsport that’s relevant to our customers such as rallying and touring cars, which brought quattro, FSI and TFSI to our road cars. This is why in 1999 we decided against F1. Instead we decided to take on the greatest race in the world. We went for Le Mans."

      Strong words? Oh yes, but honest and we respect that. The question is, does Mr. Ullrich have a point? Is Formula 1 pointless to road car development? BMW pulled out of it, but at the same time BMW purists have argued that the moment BMW pulled out is what signified the beginning of BMW cost cutting measures and the end of motors that mimicked high revving F1 powerplants. Porsche recently announced that the next generation 911 models will have KERS, a technology used in Formula 1, although Porsche has no F1 program.

      Audi believes that Le Mans is tougher than F1 and more technology carries over. The Audi Motorsport boss states that the fuel economy requirements in a race like Le Mans, which is 24 hours long, carry over to production cars. Ullrich said the following, "'Our goal is track to road technology. The best proof of technology is success in motorsport. Lightweight construction, downsized engines and greater economy – they are as relevant for the road as they are for the track."

      It is definitely true that Audi has focused more on lightweight material as of late. They have also improved in fuel economy and are bringing more powerful diesels to market seemingly with what they have learned by racing diesels at Le Mans. Ullrich closed with the following statement, "Let me show you how at Le Mans, one of our cars will cover 325 miles more than an F1 car will cover in an entire season, our average speed including pits stops will be 20mph higher than an F1 car and we will use 42% less fuel. You cannot argue with those figures."

        I would have to agree with him from a practical side of things. However I still believe there is more draw and marketing that comes from the f1 racing circuit!

        Well he does have a point, not to mention that Audi would say something like that because they won lemans like 3 times. But still, he has a point.

        Audi has won 9 times, tied with Ferrari for second all time, and has dominated the race the past decade.

        I do think he made some good points and would agree a 24 hour race is a bit more difficult.

        Wrong, in the last 40 years F1 has been the source of the new features on road cars.
        if Mr. Ullrich wants to bring VW excuses about their F1 absence, well it's another story but if he wants to downgrade F1 i fully disagree.

        I think both have applications he just want to say Le Mans is more relevant because that is what they do. How much F1 technology really transfer over vs. Le Mans though? I'd wager Le Mans has more of a real world impact.

        Which circuit do you believe would bring more fame and glory to audi and ultimately a bigger fan base with more units sold? F1 or Le Mans?

        Dude absolute every feature related to performance or handling on road cars was experienced on F1 many years ago.
        right we can't get adjustable wings and spoilers on road cars, but it doesn't mean they have nothing to do with road cars.
        Le mans has more real world impact ? yes, but we should remember a big part of features on Le Mans came straight from F1.

        I think the case can be made for either but with LeMans they really are running their diesels for 24 hours... that's tough. Fuel economy has a bigger impact in that race as does longevity, he makes a good point about those aspects.
