    • DCT Build Part IX - SSP billet DCT fluid/oil pan - major part of cooling system upgrade

As promised in the previous update on the DCT build, we are bringing you details on the cooling system. What you see here is the SSP billet pan and this has been the major hold-up in the completion of the cooling system having undergone multiple designs. What this pan offers is an additional 2 liters of fluid capacity, cooling fins to dissipate heat, additional cooling through an external source, and better access for fluid changes.

With more material on the bottom as well as cooling fins this will act as a giant heat sink of sorts similar to the cooling system upgrades SSP offers for the GTR. One of the main obstacles for the DCT is heat build up and the idea is to get as much fluid out as quickly as possible. Even if the hardware is upgraded if you can not cool it is just a waste as it will be burned up just as easily as the stock hardware.

The pan will be able to connect to an external upgraded cooling source where the additional fluid can be pumped to. It will also offer easier access to change the DCT fluid when necessary. This billet pan forms the major portion of the cooling system upgrade which will retail for somewhere in between $2300-$3000 and will be compatible with all current BMW DCT transmission.

Then there's the possibility of the tranny breaking as it's the first unit ... Hope not

I remember a story about 2 M5s that took longer.
O wait, that was not a good build....

I believe this strengthening would be needed badly for all-out N54 DCTs out there. I was considering trading my 6MT for DCT and doing this, but since Dzenno's Wot-box introduction, no lift shifting will take place all over N54 platform, I'll just keep my MT. I wonder how quick are the shifts when comparing AT, MT (no lift shift) and DCT.

DCT picks up almost a tenth per shift on a manual. Not sure on an auto but faster as well.

It will be the first one built to this level but no the first one with upgraded parts. The upgraded discs have gone in a few cars already.

Just throwing out some numbers of my vague mamery I'd say DCT is 0.08s AT is 0.2s and MT obviously depends... keeping throttle down and just kicking the glutch and throwing the gear I'd say 0.2 can be done by a good driver.

Just wanted to say, spoke to Kirs@SSP today. He got the new seals back already and the trans should be complete either today or tomorrow. Car will then be shipping back after the 1st.

        I will have pictures soon.

I hope so. I'm not even that concerned about the build time, it's other people I want to shut up, HARD.

The motor was already built. Really it's the big blower and the tuning that will be the last hurdle. Go big or go home.

They started assembling today but will finish Monday. Pictures to come soon.

Another interesting tidbit, they are developing even higher capacity discs after these. So if I somehow manage to destroy these (I'll do my best) there will be an even higher torque capable solution.
