Chevy continues their dominance in the WTCC in their FWD Chevy Cruze winning both Race 1 and Race 2 to take a large lead in the manufacturer's championship. Tom Coronel did well taking the pole for Race 2 but finished in 4th place in both races. He picked up some great points. The racing was interesting as you can see in the video but when the rain came down the FWD's had an advantage according to Tom. Regardless, Chevy seems to be running away with this series. ...Published on 07-18-2011 01:42 AM
The Cayman R in stock form is fairly potent putting out 330 horsepower from a 3.4 liter motor with 12.5:1 compression. That is just under 100 horsepower per liter from a fairly small and high strung naturally aspirated motor. Squeezing out more power is not easy but EVOMS was able to get gains of 16 horsepower and 14 pound-feet of torque at peak. Through the curve, they were able to pick up 20 horsepower in the mid range. ...Published on 07-17-2011 05:42 PM
This round of DTM racing was unlike any other. For the first time ever, DTM did a knockout racing competition set in a stadium. Odd? Yes, kind of. The video below will give you a better idea of what this looked like but basically on the first day drivers set their times. Then the field was cut and on the second day of racing the top 8 drivers from Audi and Mercedes were pitted against each other in knock-out races for a 16 car field. The final race came down to Bruno Spengler and Audi's Edoardo Mortara with Spengler coming out on top. ...Published on 07-17-2011 04:33 PM
For whatever reason, we have seen some race cars fly over barriers during Motorsport events as of late. At the Nurburgring 24 hours, a BMW 318 race car flew over the barrier during a wreck. Also, who can forget the horrible Audi crash from this years the 24 Hours of Le Mans? This Alpina B6 race car literally jumped over the barrier and straight into a portable toilet. Good thing nobody was inside and there were no serious injuries sustained to drivers or spectators as a result of these crashes. ...Published on 07-17-2011 04:31 AM
We do not know what it is as of late, but German pick-ups are all the rage. From the BMW X5 pickup renderings to the M3 pickup it seems we can not get away from this topic. Someone with a Q7 apparently liked the idea enough to add a truck bed to their Q7. We do not know where this Q7 came from and would like to get more photos and details. Details and explanation from the owner would not hurt as well. ...Published on 07-17-2011 04:00 AM
We finished dyno tuning the HPF "Right Hand Drive" (RHD) turbo system with some great results. Each turbo system we produce is designed for a specific application. The RHD application was designed for the track / autocross / daily driver and required the use of twin turbos as opposed to one larger turbo as the factory steering shaft and A/C was retained. These GT22 turbos spool so fast that the benefits result from high torque results at very low rpm. The downside is with the smaller turbos, peak horsepower is less than with a comparable larger turbo. ...Published on 07-17-2011 02:22 AM
The Russians at dragtimes.info are providing us with a lot of great race videos. This video has a lot of runs so if you want to see a bunch of different GTR and 911 comparisons this is it. It tuned and stock GTR's taking on the 997 GT2 as well as tuned 997 Turbos. There is also some Porsche on Porsche action. Kick back and enjoy the races, the editing is done well enough to let you know what is what. ...Published on 07-16-2011 05:23 AM
The SLR really does not need anything done to it to get more attention. Here is an owner who went overboard. Yes, seems this would be vehicle belonging to someone from the Middle East. Surprising, I know. A little bit of research points to Dubai as where the car is registered. It does not look terrible but just seems like a shame to do this to a vehicle that deserves classy modification. This is a McLaren SLR after all. Hey, if getting attention was the goal, it worked. ...Published on 07-16-2011 05:12 AM
Audi seems intent to let everyone know at Frankfurt they mean business and are becoming a major global auto player. A $14.3 million dollar temporary hall to show off certainly is going to get them some attention. The 15,000 square foot booth on steroids is being constructed by a German firm and will feature a 400 meter long test track running through it. You will be able to test drive cars right there in the Audi hall. A lot of coin for a temporary structure but we hope Audi is setting a trend others will follow by taking the car show experience to the next level. ...Published on 07-16-2011 05:10 AM
We really like 5th Gear and prefer how it is more substance than fluff. This wasn't up to their usual standards though. We love Vicki but having her in one car (the M3) and Tiff Needell in the other does not make for an accurate comparison. Also, the drifting scoring seems haphazardly done with them just pulling out numbers. The laptime comparison being done using an Iphone to time from inside the car isn't exactly the professional timing we would expect. If we were to apply their own scoring system, we give the comparison a 6/10. ...Published on 07-16-2011 04:00 AM
Car Planet Racing in Cheshire, England was facing the same problem as so many of our customers – how do we turn an OBD-II chassis into a full race car without sacrificing engine functionality? They had an E92 BMW M3 from which they wanted maximum lightness and simplicity. But the electronics architecture of the chassis made this impossible. They wanted full control of their engine tuning as well but was constrained by the heavy and complicated BMW electronics system. The solution? Call Apex Speed Technology! ...Published on 07-16-2011 02:41 AM
Yet another great mile drag race video from the Russians over at dragtimes.info. This time two Switzer cars square off, a 997.1 Turbo with the R800 package and a Nissan GT-R with the R850 package. The Switzer R850 GTR package is $35990 and good for 191 in the mile according to Switzer. The R800 997.1 turbo package is said to be good for 700 whp and it retails for $26990. Surprising to see the Porsche take it although it is lighter. If it was a PDK Turbo, would have been a larger gap. ...Published on 07-16-2011 01:11 AM
This is kind of an odd comparison as the cars are not exactly direct rivals. The CLS and A7 are a natural comparison but not when it is the CLS500 vs. the supercharged V6 A7. The S7 is going to be the car that competes with the CLS550 since it will also have a turbocharged V8. The Jaguar XJ isn't a 4 door coupe and is more of an A8 and S-class competitor. So, the cars are not really positioned against each other all that well but they end up picking the CLS550 which was also the fastest car. The Audi was the best handling. ...Published on 07-15-2011 06:51 PM
You should know by now BMW is returning to DTM racing. They will be racing an M3 which will have a 4.0 liter V8 (coincidence the road car features the same style of motor? Nope) which will be putting out about 480 horsepower depending on the restrictors used. BMW last raced in DTM from 1984-1992. The last victory coming in October, 1992 on the Hockenheim with an E30 M3 Evo. Two decades was far too long of a break, we look forward to seeing the new M3 DTM car in action. ...Published on 07-15-2011 04:51 AM
Maybe we are a bit sensitive since we are a BMW Enthusiast site. We like to see innovation and BMW has been one of the best at introducing technologies or designs that eventually others in the industry copy. We just wish they would focus like they once did on introducing innovations and technologies designed to enhance the driving experience instead of trying to score environmental kudos. The only person at BMW who had the courage to question the direction where BMW was heading was BMWNA head Jim O'Donnel who was forced to apologize for daring to question the electric strategy. Watch the vid and see how our beloved BMW is changing before your eyes. ...Published on 07-15-2011 04:32 AM
Been itching for an upgrade to your SLS AMG? Of course you have. Some may say $8,200 is a lot of money and well, they are right. These headers have 200 cell cats built into them which explains part of the cost. Honestly, hard to justify $8,200 on headers considering the 63 AMG header market but the SLS is a lower production vehicle than say a C63 with a much higher price tag. The headers are also ceramic coated. Gains are claimed as +20 horsepower but we would like to see a dyno. ...Published on 07-15-2011 02:51 AM
You should know by now Porsche is working on a Cajun entry level SUV. It is going to be available in 3-door form and we think a 5-door should be only natural as well. It will likely take after the Land Rover Evoque in that sense. Autocar claims these images were leaked from sources inside Porsche. The SUV will be based on the Q5 platform and should appear in about 2 years. Take a look and see what you think of the styling. ...Published on 07-15-2011 02:32 AM
This is a pretty interesting project that no doubt is not going to be easy. The owner, Bryan Whitmore, sourced Advanced Technologies, HT Motorsport and EFI Express to complete swapping in the C5 RS6 twin turbo 4.2 liter V8 into his 2007 B7 RS4. The motor is fully built featuring JE Pistons, IE rods, and other hardware from ARP. He is aiming for 700 horsepower at all 4 wheels. We wish him luck! ...Published on 07-15-2011 01:31 AM
The car is our 2011 135i w/ DCT, JB4 (Stage2), AR 4" downpipe, and WW quick install meth kit. I have an N55 Helix IC for it but have not had time to install it yet, hopefully soon! The car is using the same Shell 91 octane + NOS octane booster it's been on for the past 3k miles. Temps were in the low 70s. For today's meth testing I wound up having to run 100% duty cycle most of the power band. Meaning the JB4 is working the wastegate as much as it can be worked. And even in that trim it struggled to hold 17psi @ 5000rpm and 13psi @ 6000rpm. ...Published on 07-15-2011 12:25 AM
The new M278 twin turbo V8 powered Mercedes vehicles are going to have a lot of the previous generation 63 AMG owners scratching their heads when they can't pull away from them at a stoplight. The new 550 models are just about as fast as the previous M156 based 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8's. Case and point, Car and Driver hit 12.8@112 in the 2012 CLS550. In the 2007 CLS63 AMG, they hit 12.6@114. Oh, the new CLS550 is also lighter by almost 200 pounds than the previous generation W219 CLS63 AMG. ...
